Ubisoft has pushed back the release date of The Division's next two expansion packs in order to focus on the game's core experience.
According to the company's internal development team the feedback that Ubisoft has received regarding the game has required them to make more changes than expected. As a result it will be focusing on patch 1.4 rather than additional content in order to bring the game up to snuff. An official post on The Division website laid out the reasons clearly.
"With Update 1.4 in the works, it has become clear with your feedback and our own observations that our priority should now be on improving the core gameplay experience. For this reason, we have made several adjustments to our development schedule: Update 1.4 will be released in October independently from Survival, and will focus entirely on bug fixing, game balancing and other improvements."
Survival, the game's second expansion will now be released later this year, and the game's final piece of DLC, Last Stand, has been pushed to 2017.
The post goes on to list some of the major issues that patch 1.4 will address. These points are pretty vague: "solo player experience" could mean any number of things, but hopefully more detailed patch notes will become available closer to when the patch goes live.
- Fixing bugs, including those listed in our Known Issues as well as many other ones
- Making loot drops more relevant to the player
- Enemy difficulty and time to kill
- Gear Sets and weapons balancing
- Solo player experience
- Dark Zone and PvP balancing
- Quality of life additions based on community suggestions (such as weapon skins no longer taking inventory space)
According to the Steam charts, The Division's player numbers have dropped off sharply over the last six months. In the past 30 days the average concurrent number of players was 3093, compared to 65,000 in March. Though it's possible that the new changes and DLC, when it eventually arrives, will be enough to hook people back in.
